  • Tony Roberts

Opening

The meeting opened at 19:08. Ted read the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake's formal proclamation regarding the anniversary weekend. Willard and Al were welcomed to this their first meeting.

Communication Strategy

Bill C. has been in contact with Cogeco TV about showing the WJ'55 film. Cogeco would like a reminder in late August.

Al, Willard, and Tony will work on contacting local WJ'55 participants.

Lou advised the development of a media plan including weekly stories starting in mid-August. CJRN Radio in Niagara Falls and CKTB Radio in St. Catharines both have community event listings that could be used. The committee should not overlook the Buffalo newspapers. There will need to be an on-site media desk where members of the media can get background information and ask questions. As well, there will need to be a media contact in the week leading up to the event to handle questions.

Souvenirs

SOSSI reports that forty commemorative covers have been ordered.

Funding Opportunities

Ted reported that the Ontario Trillium Foundation has approved a grant of $7500. Once Ted receives the documentation from Scouts Canada, he and George will review and adjust the budget. Normally, the grant documentation will state which budget line items were not funded.

The Foster Hewitt Foundation has approved a grant of $2000 to pay for the commemorative plaque. Ted will send a thank you note.

Commemoration Event

Bands for Parade

The Preston Scout House Band has agreed to participate in the parade. They require $1000 to cover their costs. Bill C. will speak with Doug F. about finding a sponsor. The band could be lead by a banner with the sponsor's logo. The committee agreed to book the band. Ted will see if the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is willing to help fund the band.

Tony will investigate the possibility of an appearance by the Lincoln and Welland Regimental Band.

Scouting Displays

The Navy Hall has been double booked with another event and will not be available on the Saturday for the SOSSI display. The Hall is available on Friday and Sunday. Bill L. will search for another venue.

Security

Ted will contact the Niagara Regional and Niagara Park Police to inform them of the event. It is best if they have heard of it beforehand if they are contacted, for example, by officials on behalf of the Governor General.

Dignitaries

Ron Dale will officially represent Parks Canada at the commemoration. The the Lord Mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the local MP and MPP have accepted their invitations to attend the event. Mike Scott has declined an invitation by the Scout Brigade of Fort George, implying that he will also not be available for the WJ'55 commemoration. The Chief Scout's office has acknowledged their invitation but has not indicated whether she will be able to come. Others have not responded.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 21:30. The next meetings will be Tuesday, August 9 and Tuesday, August 23, 2005.
